About Dr. Tau
Gregory Tau, MD, PhD, FAPA, FASAM (he/him) is a physician board-certified in General Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Addiction Medicine. For over 15 years, he has provided expert, customized, and collaborative mental health care to diverse individuals at all life stages.
Dr. Tau attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and trained in Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center & The New York State Psychiatric Institute. He specialized in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at New York University Child Study Center & Bellevue Hospital. He further focused on substance use and addiction through a research fellowship and by serving as faculty at Columbia / NYSPI. Dr. Tau received additional formal psychotherapy training through the NYU Psychoanalytic Institute and in several evidence-based psycho-therapeutic modalities.
In his clinical practice, Dr. Tau works as a psychopharmacologist, therapist, and consultant with children, adolescents, adults, and families, including those affected by drugs and alcohol. As part of his holistic approach to mental health, Dr. Tau integrates expert medication management with psychotherapies that include Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), family and couples therapies, as well as parent and other specialized coaching.
Dr. Tau holds a faculty position at Columbia University Medical Center, where he has researched how mental illnesses such as substance use disorders impact the brain’s neural systems’ functioning. He has obtained federal and foundation grants, published his findings, and presented his work at universities, medical centers, and conferences nationwide.
In addition to research, Dr. Tau received awards for supervision of clinical and research trainees, and teaching on the treatment of substance use disorders in youth, brain development & cognitive neuroscience, and psychiatric genetics. He has also volunteered with professional organizations and community groups to reduce the burden of drugs and alcohol on the lives of young people.
