Frequently Asked Questions
-
Although he is recognized for working with youth and emerging adults, Dr. Tau has expertise working with individuals across the developmental spectrum – from children to individuals in middle age. In fact, many of his patients are younger kids and adults in their 30s and older.
-
Dr. Tau is known for his work with individuals who have an unhealthy relationship with drugs and alcohol, but many of his patients do not use substances or have an addiction. He specializes in a range of conditions such as depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, trauma, and personality disorders, among others.
-
Dr. Tau is careful to keep the number of patients he cares for low enough for him to get to know you as an individual and to be able to spend as much time with you as appropriate to your clinical needs. As a private, solo practitioner, he prioritizes building a warm professional relationship with his patients and making time for you if there’s an urgent need or a crisis.
You may have access to Dr. Tau directly between sessions and can expect him to be responsive to reasonable and appropriate clinical needs. He often checks up on his patients between sessions and can make house calls when clinically necessary.
-
To allow Dr. Tau to offer personalized, expert clinical care, he works outside of the managed care system. This means the practice does NOT take insurance and charges the typical and customary NYC rates for a private, highly specialized senior clinician.
We do not typically communicate with insurance companies and will provide you with documentation to use for reimbursement by your insurer if you have those benefits.
Please make an inquiry for more information.

Dr. Tau works both in person and by Telehealth. Although his in-person availability is more limited, he strongly believes that meeting in the office can be an important part of treatment for many people.
Once we’ve established your ongoing treatment plan, ongoing sessions may be held in person at his Midtown Manhattan office or via video conferencing, depending on your clinical needs.
-
In preparation for your first session, Dr. Tau will speak with you to learn about the challenges that you experience and the help you seek. He will also ask you to fill out some questionnaires that will give him a better sense of how you’ve been feeling. Before your first meeting, he will review the information you send him and, with your permission, may also speak with other individuals in your life (e.g., family, therapist, etc).
During your first session, we’ll take a deeper dive into the challenges that you’ve been experiencing by taking a thorough history. Once we have enough information to get us started, we will collaborate on developing a psychiatric treatment plan. This strategy is designed to provide you with the support you need to meet your clinical goals and become the person you are meant to be.
As part of collaborative care, please come prepared with a description of your symptoms, a list of your current prescriptions (including any over-the-counter medications and supplements), any questions you have about your diagnosis and treatment options, and of course your goals for the meeting and treatment.
-
Dr. Tau is a private, solo practitioner meaning that you will have access to him directly and expect him to be responsive to reasonable and appropriate clinical needs. Once in treatment with Dr. Tau, he will provide methods for contacting him as necessary between sessions.

Dr. Tau offers Spravato® (esketamine), which is an FDA-approved prescription medication for Treatment-Resistant Depression, Major Depressive Disorder, and suicidal thoughts or behavior. It’s administered as a nasal spray under Dr. Tau’s medical supervision in his office.
After receiving Sparvato, you will be able to relax with music or a nap, while Dr. Tau monitors you until you’re ready to leave the office. Some patients might have their therapist present to support the integration of their experience. Sparvato appointments last 2-3 hours, and we will need someone to help you get home after the treatment.
For the optimal effect on depression, it is recommended patients receive a series of Sparvato treatments. Dr. Tau will explain the details of the treatment plan if he determines Spravato will be helpful for you.
